The 6 Best Healthy Fat Foods

Believe it or not, not all fats are bad. These healthy fats can help keep your cholesterol at healthy levels and help keep you feeling full.
We used to think that “fat” was a dirty word. But in fact, there are many healthy fats that can reduce high cholesterol, promote good cholesterol, and be a part of a heart-healthy diet. The secret is to focus on the right fats.
Good fats are monounsaturated fats such as olive oil, canola oil, nuts, and avocados, and there are also the polyunsaturated fats found in omega-3 fish, flaxseed, walnuts, and pumpkin seeds.
These fats help reduce total cholesterol while raising the ‘good’ high-density lipoprotein, or HDL, cholesterol. This protects the heart from heart disease and also helps reduce total body inflammation. Additionally, these fats nourish healthy hair, skin, nails, and bones.
Of course, these healthy fats are still fats — according to government guidelines, they should make up no more than 20 to 35 percent of your overall calorie intake. But a good rule of thumb is to choose monounsaturated fats in place of unhealthy saturated fats and trans fats whenever possible.

Fill Up on Fatty Fish
The 6 Best Healthy Fat Foods
Fatty, oily fish are rich in omega-3 fatty acids, healthy fats that have been shown to reduce the risk for heart disease and high cholesterol. Salmon, tuna, trout, and Atlantic or Pacific mackerel are great sources of omega-3 fatty acids. Grilled, baked, or broiled, include fish in your heart-healthy diet at least twice a week for a total of 8 ounces, she suggests.
Go Greek With Olives and Olive Oil
The 6 Best Healthy Fat Foods
Olives are rich in monounsaturated fat. Add them to salads or snacks, and cook with olive oil whenever possible as part of a heart-healthy diet.
Olive oil is made up of triglycerides that contain a very large percentage of monounsaturated fatty acids. Up to 80 percent of olive oil is monounsaturated, primarily the omega-9 fatty acid known as oleic acid.
The high monounsaturated fatty acid content of olive oil is extremely cardioprotective — it cuts your ‘bad’ cholesterol level, helps prevent atherosclerosis, and can bump up your level of HDL, the ‘good’ cholesterol.
Slice Up Some Avocados
The 6 Best Healthy Fat Foods
This green fruit is packed with healthy fats, specifically monounsaturated fats that help raise your good cholesterol levels as part of heart-healthy diet. Because avocados are high in calories and fat, moderation makes sense when enjoying them. Add avocado slices to a sandwich or dice them up in a salad.

Grab a Handful of Almonds and Walnuts
The 6 Best Healthy Fat Foods
Most nuts and seeds are good healthy-fat choices, but almonds and walnuts are at the top of many experts’ lists as a great part of a heart-healthy diet to lower high cholesterol. Almonds and walnuts are quick, delicious, and easy for a mid-morning or mid-day snack.
Make your own trail mix using your favorite ingredients or simply add to salads. Try using ground almonds as a coating on baked chicken or fish.
Throw Flaxseeds Into the Mix
The 6 Best Healthy Fat Foods
Along with nuts, seeds get high marks as healthy fats to improve good cholesterol. And flaxseeds are especially popular among nutritionists because of their versatility in a heart-healthy diet.
Sprinkle flaxseeds onto whatever you like. You can even bake with it, too: try using 3 tablespoons of flaxseed in place of 1 tablespoon of oil or margarine in your muffins or any other type of bakery.
Get Cooking With Canola Oil
The 6 Best Healthy Fat Foods
When olive oil doesn’t fit into a recipe, canola oil is a healthy fat that’s a suitable heart-healthy diet alternative to high-cholesterol choices. Swap out your butter and margarine with canola oil when you are cooking and baking.

ASUU STRIKE: Senate President, David Mark Begs ASUU To Call Off Strike

Senate President David Mark barely stopped short of calling those who negotiated the 2009 Federal Government agreement with the Academic Staff Union of Universities foolish.
photo
Mark said the government negotiators couldn’t differentiate between their right and left hands and that the ASUU leadership took advantage of their ignorance.
He said, “Listening to the agreement that was signed by the Federal Government as Comrade Uche Chukwumerije read out, I was really wondering whether this was signed or it was just a proposal.
“But when he concluded, he said it was signed. It only shows the level of people the executive sent to go and negotiate on their behalf because ab initio, people must be told the truth, what can be accomplished and what cannot be accomplished.
“If a leader says I am going to accomplish this, he is morally duty bound to honour it. But even if you decided immediately after that you cannot accomplish it, I think it is only proper for you to go back and start renegotiating.
“But if you prolong it on the basis that you are still going to honour it and you don’t honour it, then it doesn’t portray us in good light.
“This is where the Federal Government ought to call those who were party to this agreement.
“On the other hand, I think ASUU simply took advantage of the ignorance of those who were sent and simply just allowed this agreement to go on because it is obvious that this is going to be very difficult piece of paper to implement.
“They found that those who were sent there simply didn’t know their right from their left and they just went ahead.
“I think that also is not fair because ASUU is an organisation in Nigeria and we are not going to go to another country to implement this piece of paper.”
The Senate President spoke on the floor of the senate during a debate on a motion by Senate Leader, Victor Ndoma-Egba. The senate, in the motion supported by 107 members, said the ASUU strike, which began July1, 2013, had become a national embarrassment.
At the head of the Federal Government re-negotiating team  with ASUU in 2009 was the boardroom guru, Deacon Gamaliel Onosode. The members of the team were Prof. Musa Abdullahi, a former Pro-Chancellor of the University of Jos who died in 2008; Prof. Creg Iwu, ex-Pro-Chancellor of Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka; Rev. Father T.E. Uwaifo, ex-Pro-Chancellor, Ambrose Ali University, Ekpoma; Emeka Nwankpa, ex-Pro-Chancellor, Abia State University, Uturu; Ambassador Muhammed Adamu Jumba, ex-Pro-Chancellor, Bayero University, Kano; Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, Executive Secretary, Education Trust Fund; and Senator Abdullah Wali, who was a member until February 2008.
Chairman, Senate Committee on Education, Senator Uche Chukwumerije, who briefed his colleagues on the text of the FG-ASUU agreement said the varsity teachers negotiated N1.5tn, comprising Varsity Funding and Earned Allowance for lecturers.
He said that ASUU demanded that the government should spread the implementation of the pact for a period of three years at N500bn per year.
Chukwumerije, who admitted that some clauses in the agreement were  ambiguous, however said efforts by the government to raise funds to meet the ASUU demands were rejected by the lecturers.
He said that ASUU had rejected the N130bn offered them by government which comprised of N100bn for funding and N30bn as Earned Allowances.
Most of the senators who contributed to the debate said that varsity education in Nigeria was underfunded but also noted that some of the demands by ASUU were outrageous.
The senators noted that both the leadership of ASUU and the Executive should shift grounds on the strike because the agreement, which was the cause of the conflict, was defective.
They also mandated the Committee on Education to continue to liaise with the Federal Ministry of Education, the National Universities Commission, ASUU and other relevant stakeholders to proffer lasting solution to stem further strikes in the education sector.
They equally mandated Mark as the Chairman of the National Assembly, to engage President Goodluck Jonathan and the leadership of ASUU in a meaningful dialogue with a view to bringing the strike to an end.
The senators lamented the crises in the education sector in the country and submitted that the current ASUU strike, if allowed to continue, could spell doom for the nation.
Mark, apparently miffed at the shoddy negotiation conducted by the government, said he could only beg the striking lecturers to go back to the classrooms and give room for a renegotiation.
Mark said, “The essence of this motion is to find a solution and a way forward. I have listened to all those that have spoken so far.
“Let us shift ground in our understanding of the problem and find a solution because if all the parties involved just dig in and they say they won’t shift ground then there will be no solution to it and Nigeria will be worse off for it.
“Whether it is the executive, the legislature or the judiciary or ASUU, not shifting ground is not going to help to find a lasting solution to the problem.
“I want to appeal to ASUU and in fact let me even use the words, I want to beg ASUU on behalf of the Senate, that they resume and come back to work. They have made a strong case. Their position is obvious now.
“We can now see the consequences of their action and I think if they extend it beyond this then they will begin to lose public sympathy.”

PHOTOS: The Scariest Army You Have Ever Seen Introduced By Taiwan

Taiwanese Special Forces recently received updated bulletproof armor to protect operators from lethal headshots and to reduce fighting effectiveness of opposing forces.
Scroll down for photos
Check out one of the scariest-looking armies ever after the jump.
The United States has also used the ballistic mask for small teams in Iraq and Afghanistan, as well as during the drug war of the 1980s.
A handful of these guys approaching is likely enough to disconcert even the most hardened cartel enforcer, but an entire platoon marching in lockstep is so terrifying we assume the weapons they’re carrying are just for show.
After all, it’s hard to hit a target that’s fleeing full-sprint in the other direction.
Each ballistic mask is apparently rated to block close-range shots from a 44 magnum – which is a hell of a weapon.
It should be noted, however, that the mask distributes the impact of a bullet over a relatively small surface area, meaning a headshot, while not lethal to the mask wearer, is sure to ruin his day and probably his dating prospects for a very long time.

Photo: President Goodluck Jonathan sets up a panel to probe car scandal related to Oduah
President Goodluck Jonathan has set up an administrative panel consisting of 3 members for the purpose of investigating the armoured car scandal related to the aviation minister Stella Oduah.
It was made known by the Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, Reuben Abati, in the course of the weekly meeting of the Executive Council of the Federation.
The body will be chaired by the immediate past Head of Service, Sali Bello.
According to the information provided, other members include the National Security Adviser Colonel Sambo Dasuki, and Air Vice Marshal Dik Iruenebere.
Mr. Abati also confirmed Jonathan had queried Mrs. Oduah asking her to provide explanations on the controversial purchase.
The new panel of enquiry should find out whether the purchase of the vehicles for about N255 million followed due process or not and also investigate the reasons for vehicles procurement.
Mr. Abati did not state if the minister would step aside while she is being investigated. Mrs. Oduah was conspicuously absent at Wednesday’s FEC meeting.
It was mentioned that the panel was given two weeks to conclude its task and give the President the necessary recommendations regarding the issue.

ASUU STRIKE: ASUU Demands N1.5tr To End Strike

The Senate on Wednesday said that the striking Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) wants N1.5 trillion to end its ongoing strike.
The Chairman of the Senate Committee on Education, Senator Uche Chukwumerije, released the figure in his contribution on a motion urging the striking lecturers to call off their strike.
The motion sponsored by the Senate Leader, Senator Victor Ndoma-Egba, and 106 others is entitled: “Appeal to Academic Staff Union of Universities to call off the strike action and return to work.”
Chukwumerije, who read the controversial 2009 agreement between the Federal Government and ASUU, said that part of the component of the agreement on funding stipulated that “all regular federal universities shall require the sum of N1.5 trillion for the period 2009 to 2011.
He said that ASUU is insisting that the agreement must be implemented to the latter.
He said the agreement also said that “This money is to be paid in three installments, 2009 – almost N500 billion; 2010 – almost N500 billion and 2011 – almost N506 billion.
Apart from the N1.5 trillion the agreement also stipulated that “each state university shall require N3.6 million” while “a minimum of 26 per cent of the annual budget should be allocated to education.”
According to him, the agreement also said that “education should be put on First Line Charge” while the Education Tax Act should be amended to its original concept as High Education Fund.”
He noted that the agreement said that “Governing Council of Universities should access and effectively utilize from Education Tax Fund funds for research, training and development of academic staff.”
Other components of the agreement included Salary Structure of Academic Staff of Nigerian universities and earned academic staff allowances.
The earned academic staff allowances include: “Post graduate supervision allowances; teaching practice and industrial allowances; honorarium for external moderation of undergraduate and postgraduate examination system, postgraduate study grants; external assessment of readers or professors, call duty and clinical duty and hazard allowance and excess workload allowance.”

Ever had that moment where you wonder if you smell, well, not so great? It happens. But you can make body odor go away. Try these six tips.
1. Keep Yourself Squeaky Clean
Shower at least once a day and you'll wash away sweat as well as reduce the number of bacteria on your skin.
Sweat by itself is virtually odorless. But when microscopic bacteria that live naturally on your skin mix with sweat, they multiply quickly and raise quite a stink.
So washing thoroughly, especially areas prone to sweating, can reduce body odor.
If you sweat normally, you might have more of a problem with body odor than people who sweat too much.
That's because, when people sweat excessively, the sweat tends to wash away the odor-causing bacteria.
2. Use Antibacterial Soap
Choose an antibacterial bath soap. Washing thoroughly with an antibacterial soap bar will reduce the bacteria count, in turn reducing the odor.
Look for the words "antibacterial" on the soap's packaging.
3. Towel Off Thoroughly
Once you've showered, be sure you dry yourself completely. Towel off and make sure you dry any areas where you sweat a lot.
If your skin is dry, it's harder for bacteria that cause body odor to breed on it.
4. Apply "Industrial Strength" Deodorants or Antiperspirants
6 Simple ATips for Reducing Body Odor
Once you are clean and dry, use a strong deodorant or antiperspirant on your underarms.
While deodorants do not prevent sweating, they mask the smell of bacteria on your skin.
Antiperspirants contain aluminum chloride, a chemical that reduces sweating, and often also contain a deodorant.
Stronger deodorants and antiperspirants are available without a prescription.
Look for products that say on the label they are higher strength due to ingredients.
If you think you need even more help, you may want to ask your doctor about prescription antiperspirants.
Apply the deodorant or antiperspirant twice a day, once in the morning and once in the evening.
5. Keep Your Wardrobe Squeaky Clean

Change clothes often when you're sweating heavily. Fresh clothes help keep body odor down.
Be sure to change your socks as well, especially if you tend to have foot odor.
Use deodorant powders in your shoes, replace insoles frequently, and go barefoot if possible.
6. Cut Out or Cut Down "Offensive" Foods
6 Simple ATips for Reducing Body Odor
What you eat affects your body odor.
Foods that tend to make you sweat more, such as hot peppers or other spicy foods, might also contribute to body odor.
And the aroma of foods such as onions or garlic can be carried in the sweat, making you smell bad.

UNBELIEVABLE: What Sleeping Can Do To Your Brain!

Research have shown that the brain uses sleep to wash away the waste toxins built up during a hard day's thinking.
photo
"Waste removal system" is one of the fundamental reasons for sleep, the team of U.S. researchers believe.
Their study, in the journal Science, showed brain cells shrink during sleep to open up the gaps between neurons and allow fluid to wash the brain clean.
They also suggest that failing to clear away some toxic proteins may play a role in brain disorders.
It has been shown to have a big role in the fixing of memories in the brain and learning, but a team at the University of Rochester Medical Centre believe that "housework" may be one of the primary reasons for sleep.
"The brain only has limited energy at its disposal and it appears that it must choose between two different functional states - awake and aware or asleep and cleaning up," said researcher Dr Maiken Nedergaard.
"You can think of it like having a house party. You can either entertain the guests or clean up the house, but you can't really do both at the same time."

Why Eating Raw Egg Is Dangerous To The Body

Commercial poultry, Funtuna Farms, a division of Animal Care Services Konsult Limited, has warned Nigerians to avoid taking raw eggs.
photo Commercial poultry, Funtuna Farms, a division of Animal Care Services Konsult Limited, has warned Nigerians to avoid taking raw eggs.
The General Manager of Funtuna Farms, Dr. Kiran Kulkarni, gave the warning during a sensitisation programme at Dansol High School, Ikeja, lagos, as part of activities to commemorate the World Egg Day in Nigeria.
Kulkarni explained that the consumption of raw eggs was unsafe, adding that cooked and boiled egg was more nutritious for the body.
He said, “Do not eat raw egg. Raw egg is dangerous because it is difficult to digest.
“Also, if you take raw eggs and they have one or two deficiencies, it goes straight into your body and the danger is high on the immune system. But if you boil or fry it, the danger will be reduced. It is advisable we boil or fry eggs before taking them.”
Also, a veterinary doctor with Funtuna Farms, Dr. Bukola Akintoye, in a presentation, explained that consuming an egg daily was beneficial to the body.
She noted that eggs were excellent and was rich in protein with potential to enhance health.
She said, “We are regularly told how important it is to eat a balanced diet; we need protein and plenty vitamins and nutrients. Fruit, vegetables and meat naturally come to mind, and when combined, these fruits can provide all these. However, one food contains them all – eggs.”

SEX EDUCATION: Top 10 Methods To Prevent Unwanted Pregnancies

Below are the 10 Most Effective Types of Contraception
photo
1. Abstinence
Continuous abstinence, or abstaining from sexual intercourse, is the only form of contraception that is 100 percent effective.
2. Condoms
Condoms are arguably the least expensive form of contraception and the easiest to obtain. They also protect couples from sharing some sexually transmitted infections. Condoms are sheaths of thin latex or plastic worn on the erect penis during intercourse. Of 100 women whose partners use condoms, about 15 will become pregnant with typical use (use that is usually but not always correct).
Only two will become pregnant with perfect use. Condoms are widely available at drug and grocery stores, family planning clinics, as well as bathroom vending machines. They are free at most campus health centers and Planned Parenthood health centers.
3. Birth Control Combination Pill, Patch or Ring
These more effective reversible methods of birth control protect 92 of 100 women from becoming pregnant with typical use (use that is usually, but not always correct) Only one or two will become pregnant with perfect use. Pills must be taken every day at the same time, patches are switched weekly and rings are changed monthly. The combination products prevent a woman’s ovaries from releasing eggs (ovulation) and thicken the cervical mucus to keep sperm from finding the egg. Commonly used pills include OrthoTri-Cyclen, Loestrin, Seasonale, Yasmin and Orth-Cept.
4. Progestin-Only Pills
There are two basic types of pills; those that contain both estrogen and progestin, and progestin-only pills. The progestin-only pills usually work by thickening the cervical mucus and preventing some ovulation. Women who cannot take estrogen use these pills including those who breastfeed, who smoke and are over 35, who are at risk for cardiovascular disease or who have had blood clots.
5. Depo Provera Shot
Depo Provera, also known as “the shot”, is an injectable progestin-only prescription birth control. It contains no estrogen, and only requires an appointment every three months. With the shot, there is no need to remembera daily pill. The shot is one of the most effective types of reversible contraception, with only three out of every 1,000 women getting pregnant with correct use. The protection is immediate if the shot is taken within the first seven days of your period. The shot prevents ovulation and/or thickens cervical mucus to prevent sperm from meeting the egg. Since it is estrogen-free, it can be used while breastfeeding, by women over 35 who smoke and by women who have had blood clots.
6. Implanon
Implanon is a small, thin, progestin-only method that is effective for up to three years. A capsule the size of a match is placed under the skin on the upper arm. Implanon prevents ovulation and thickens the cervical mucus. When inserted correctly, Implanon is as effective as sterilization with less than one woman becoming pregnant per 100.
7. Intrauterine Device (IUD).
An IUD, is a small, T-shaped contraceptive made of flexible plastic. It is inserted into the uterus through the cervix. A string is attached that ends in the vagina allowing rapid removal once the woman wishes to conceive. Two types are currently available in the United States; the copper ParaGuard, which provides reversible sterilization for 12 years, and Mirena, which releases a small amount of progestin for five years. They both work by killing sperm in the uterus and prevent fertilization in the fallopian tube. Female physicians in the U.S. and much of the world’s women choose to use the IUD. Less than one in 100 women will become pregnant with an IUD. ParaGuard can also be used as emergency contraception if inserted within 5 days of unprotected sex.
8. Diaphragm
The diaphragm is a shallow, dome-shaped cup with a flexible rim. It fits securely in thevagina to cover the cervix, blocking sperm from entering the uterus. For added protection, spermicide is put in the bowl of the diaphragm before insertion. 15 out of 100 women will become pregnant with typical use before starting their families and 25 of 100 will become pregnant who have already had at least one child through vaginal delivery.
9. Emergency Contraception (EC)
Emergency contraception, or “the morning after pill” prevents pregnancy up to 120 hours unprotected sex. “Morning after” is actually a misnomer-- the pills can be taken immediately after sex or up to five days later. The pill contains progestin that prevents ovulation and/or fertilization. The sooner the better, but if taken within 72 hours, it reduces a woman’s chances of becoming pregnant by 85%. EC will not cause an abortion or interrupt an existing pregnancy.
10. Essure
The Essure procedure is a new form of permanent birth control without an incision. It is an excellent alternative to a tubal ligation. With Essure, a woman can avoid the hospital, recover by the next day and still enjoy the benefit of permanent birth control that is over 99% effective. The doctor uses a miniature camera device to insert two spring-like coils through the cervix into the fallopian tubes. Over the next three months, the body forms an irreversible tissue barrier that prevents sperm from reaching the egg. A confirmation test is then done to ensure that the tubes are completely blocked, and then all other forms of contraception can be discontinued permanently.

Oprah Winfrey Shuns Obama, Refuses White House Invitation

Oprah Winfrey has been notably distancing herself from President Obama and First Lady Michelle and apparently her latest slight came against Obamacare.
The media icon was asked to attend a meeting at the White House along with other celebrities to see how they could help create some positive publicity for the Affordable Care Act.
Rather than jumping on board like Alicia Keys and Jennifer Hudson, Oprah reportedly quickly said that she would not be attending the meeting.
'All of Oprah’s top people thought she would go, because when the president invites you to the White House, most people automatically say yes, but Oprah said she didn’t have the time or inclination to go. It wasn’t like she had to think it over. It was an immediate, flat-out, unequivocal no,' an Oprah advisor told journalist Ed Klein.
According to Klein, the slight is just the talk show host's latest way of getting back at the Obama administration for failing to live up to the alleged promises that they agreed to when Winfrey campaigned for Obama in 2008.
The talk show host used her sizable clout to help get the then-one-term Senator elected, and she thought that in return, she would be able to have special access to the administration.
This is a burnt bridge that will not be fixed anytime soon, Klein argues, which could come at more of a cost to the TV host than the President.
'Obama hasn’t budged, and neither has Oprah. She’s hurt and angry, and I seriously doubt that Oprah will ever make up with the Obamas. She knows how to hold a grudge,' a source close to Winfrey said.

Ferguson's Book: I Told C.Ronaldo 'I'd Rather Shoot You Than Sell You Now

Former Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson has lifted the lid on how he promised Cristiano Ronaldo his dream move to Real Madrid.
photo Former Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson has lifted the lid on how he promised Cristiano Ronaldo his dream move to Real Madrid.
In Alex Ferguson: My Autobiography, which goes on general sale on Thursday, the Scot tells of how then Madrid president Ramon Calderon's public overtures riled him to the extent that he refused to sanction a sale despite Ronaldo's desire to move to Spain.
Ronaldo would eventually join Madrid for £80 million (€94m) in 2009, which Ferguson believes was a statement of intent from re-instated president Florentino Perez.

The Scot writes: "Madrid paid £80 million in cash for him, and do you know why? It was a way for Florentino Perez, their president, to say to the world, ‘We are Real Madrid, we are the biggest of the lot'.

"When the possibility of him leaving edged towards being a probability, I reached a gentleman’s agreement with him.
"I went to Carlos’s house in Portugal to find the boy expressing an urge to go to Real Madrid, and told him: 'You can’t go this year, not after the way Calderon has approached the issue'.

"I said, ‘I know you want to go to Real Madrid. But I’d rather shoot you than sell you to that guy now. If you perform, don’t mess us about, and someone comes and offers a world record fee, then we will let you go.’

"I did well to calm him down. I told him that the reason I was refusing to sell him that year was because of Calderon. I said, ‘If I do that, all my honour’s gone, everything’s gone for me, and I don’t care if you have to sit in the stands. ASUU Strike Will Be Over Soon - Jonathan Declares

President Goodluck Jonathan promised yesterday to end the doctors’ and university teachers’ strike.
The teachers’ is over 90 days. Members of the National Association of Resident Doctors (NARD) are also on strike. The professionals are blaming the government for failing to meet up with the agreement reached with them.
Jonathan promised to end the strike when he received the leaders of the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA), led by its President, Dr. Osahon Enabulele.
Presidential spokesman Dr. Reuben Abati, in a statement on the meeting which reporters were prevented from covering, said the President promised to do his all to resolve all issues that caused disputes.
He said the government attached great importance to the medical and educational sectors.
He said: “I believe that we must manage both sectors in such a way that nobody engaged in them will think of going on strike again.
“We will continue to proactively evolve measures that will help us to permanently overcome the problems that lead to strikes by health and education professionals,” he added.
To facilitate rapid establishment of more centres of medical excellence in the country, President Jonathan pledged that the Federal Government would fully explore the option of creating a special intervention fund.
According to him, the recommendation of a special fund that will give low interest loans for the establishment of state-of-the-art medical facilities is a creative idea that will receive appropriate consideration from the government.
He said: “We are committed to working with professionals and the private sector to establish better medical facilities in the country and reduce the number of Nigerians who have to go abroad annually for medical reasons.”
Jonathan also assured the doctors that his administration would create the right conditions to enable doctors to stay at home and avail Nigerians of their acknowledged skills and expertise instead of migrating to other countries.
He said his administration was determined to correct the anomaly of Nigeria being so strong in human capacity in medicine, with about 25,000 Nigerian medical consultants currently practising in the United States , as confirmed to him by President Barack Obama; and yet being unable to treat many of its sick people in its own hospitals.
Jonathan said: “There is clearly a missing link somewhere and we will do everything possible to fix it. We will continue to work with professional bodies and all stakeholders to come up with more policies and actions that will help us overcome current challenges in our medical sector.
“We will work with the National Assembly to ensure the quick passage of the National Health Bill. We will take prompt action to reconstitute the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria. We will also consider recommendations for the establishment of the Office of Surgeon-General of the Federation.”
“I believe that we must always do what is best for our country. We will review all the other issues you have raised and act accordingly. When things are done properly, issues of welfare and remuneration in the health sector will disappear,” the President said.
Dr. Enabulele assured President Jonathan of NMA’s support for his administration’s agenda.
He called for urgent reconstitution of the main regulatory body in the health sector, the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria which was dissolved in 2011.
The NMA President also called for faster action on the passage of the National Health Bill and other issues related to the creation of a more conducive operating environment for doctors and other healthcare professionals such as remuneration, welfare and training.
The President was decorated with the emblem of the NMA by Prof. Umaru Shehu.
The NMA delegation included the Emir of Tsonga, Dr. Haliru Yahaya, the NMA Second Vice-President, Dr. Uche Ojinmah and the NMA Secretary-General, Dr. Akpufuoma Pemu.

ASUU STRIKE: Return To Classrooms, Jonathan Begs Union

President Goodluck Jonathan on Saturday in Ado-Ekiti appealed to members of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) to return to the classrooms in the interest of their students.
 photo
He made the appeal at the inauguration of the three-storey College of Engineering Complex at the Afe Babalola University, Ado-Ekiti (ABUAD), Ekiti State, which was also named after the President.
Jonathan urged ASUU members to heed his appeal saying that whatever their grievances might be, keeping students out of school for four months was unpatriotic.
“I once again appeal to the entire membership of ASUU to pause and ponder on the adverse effect of their action on the future of the vibrant youths of this great nation. The collective destiny of tens of thousands of tomorrow’s leaders should not be held hostage to vagaries of labour disputes.
“So, let me use this unique opportunity that I am interfacing with our future leaders, our students, to plead with ASUU members. If it is a genuine strike keeping students out of classrooms for almost four months, by that they have demonstrated to everybody that they have a case. And if the strike is motivated by some other interests, they have also achieved that by keeping students out of schools for more than a semester,” he said.
The President emphasised that the freedom of association and the right of workers to go on strike should not be abused to harm the country’s interest.
He noted that as long government had shown commitment to improving the qualities of infrastructure in the universities and the operating environment, ASUU should reconsider its stand.
Jonathan noted that if students of private universities could get their degrees within three and half years as witnessed in ABUAD, “it is unacceptable that students of public institutions are kept for extra one or two years

70-Year-Old Nigerian Pilgrim Dies At The 2013 Hajj Pilgrimage

The Sokoto State delegation to the 2013 Hajj Pilgrimage on Saturday in Sokoto said one of its male pilgrims, Amadu Achida, has died in Saudi Arabia.
photo
Labaran Dundaye, the Chairman of the delegation’s Publicity Committee, disclosed this in a telephone interview.
He said the 70-year-old Achida, died on Oct. 16 at Muna, two days after observing the Arafat.
“Achida, who hailed from Wurno Local Government of Sokoto State, died after the Arafat which is considered to be the peak of the annual Islamic pilgrimage,’’ Dundaye said.
The delegation official, who is also the Chairman of the State Council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), said the deceased died after a brief illness.
“The incident took place at Muna, near Makkah, two days after the Arafat and he was complaining of minor body pains and other bodily discomforts.
“Shortly after, he was confirmed dead, and this made him so far the only pilgrim from the state who died during this year’s Hajj exercise,’’ he said.
Dundaye said Achida’s remains had since been buried by the Saudi authorities at Makkah, after a funeral prayer at the Grand Mosque at the Ka’abah.
He however said all the remaining pilgrims from the state were hale and hearty, while the family of the deceased had since been duly informed about his demise.

EMENIKE: I CAN BE BIGGER THAN YEKINI

EMENIKE: I CAN BE BIGGER THAN YEKINI

Emmanuel Emenike accepts that filling Rashidi Yekini's larger-than-life shoes is a tall order, but the Fenerbahce striker says, in this interview with mtnfootball, that he can surpass the legend's achievements in the coming years.

You scored a brace to move Nigeria closer to Brazil 2014 World Cup, how was the feeling before the goals?

Emenike: The feeling was positive, I didn't feel pressure before or during the game because I knew the game would only last for 90 minutes and during that time anything could happen.

I don't play with pressure and will not start now. I know there was pressure from the Ethiopians due to their bad pitch and all sorts of tricks to beat us, but I grew up to be optimistic.

I was so sure that we couldn't lose that game and the worst that could have happen would have been a draw. I was waiting for the opportunity at goal and I was calm enough to score.  Mind you I can't take the glory for that victory it was a collective one, we all fought for the victory.

How did you feel on a personal note to score two goals in such a crucial game?

I felt good sincerely, but I think we need to work harder for the return leg and quickly forget the victory in Addis Ababa. As a striker, when you score and your team win, you will definitely get the usual applause and be happy. I am excited because we conquered our fears.

The weather was another big factor that worked against the Eagles. How was the team able to cope?

The weather was an issue, but we put our mind off it and prepared for the battle. The victory was the reward of our hard work. We were lucky because the weather stayed in our favour to an extent.

We all knew what would happen in Ethiopia, we knew we will be facing another side of the Ethiopians and we met it the way it was planned, but as a good team, we survived all.

What can you say about Ethiopia?

They are a good side. They gave us a scare, they were everywhere and determined for revenge but we went, we saw and we conquered.

We played against a good side in the Ethiopians. We knew that right from the Nations Cup and they have improved.

You have featured at the Africa Cup of Nations and now how do you feel that you are close to playing in the biggest competition in the world, the World Cup?

I am glad to have played in the Nations Cup and won. I am dreaming of playing in my first World Cup for Nigeria. That will be the first time I will be at the World Cup and to get to play in Brazil, where they are crazy about football, would be a dream come true.

I missed the Confederations Cup due to injury. I started nursing the dream to play in World Cup since 1994. I was a very small boy then, but could still remember how the older boys around followed the tournament and were mentioning the players’ names, praising them. Ever since then, I have wanted to also be praised for playing at the World Cup. It would be great to play in Brazil.

My mother started telling me how she wanted me to make her proud when I started playing as a professional player due to the love she has for the Super Eagles and I have held on to this. Now, I will keep working hard to see my dream comes true next year.

Were you under pressure while you could not get goals for the Eagles at the start of your international career?

There was a lot of talk here and there, but I didn't allow that to weigh me down when I was not getting the goals for Nigeria because I knew they would come. I kept working hard and resolved to give my best because I always knew I would score goals for Nigeria and it has now materialised.

You have been banging in the goals since your return to the team after the injury layoff at AFCON, what is the secret?

God is my secret because he always answers my prayers and grants my desires. He knows what I want and the best time to do it for me, so I am grateful to him.

Aside from that, I see the World Cup as big business for Nigeria; the fans are eager to see us getting the ticket which is a great one for us as footballers.

The fans have so much confidence in you and believe you will get the goals for the Eagles...

I feel honoured, but it is a team work. I am only living my dreams and it's my pleasure that Nigeria are now closer to Brazil 2014. We will complete the job in Calabar next month.

Nigerians are celebrating the World Cup ticket already, should they be doing so even though there is still a return leg match?

It is to be expected for the fans to celebrate such a victory because it was away from home, but we the players are not thinking that way. I am sure the ticket is within the reach now. Our fans should know that we as footballers always want to win and they should always have it in their mind that football is all about ups and downs. Today, we make them happy, but tomorrow could be different but with their support, we could always right the wrong.

How did you see your combination with Brown Ideye this time around again?

I have always been confident about any player I play alongside. I try as much as possible to study their style and adapt to it. Apart from Brown, and I can play with anybody provided there is a good understanding between us up front.

I have so much confidence in my team mates because without them, there is no team and there won’t be progress but when we understand ourselves better anybody can score the goals.

You have been touted by many as the new Rashidi Yekini in the Eagles, what can you say on this?

Rashidi Yekini's shoes are still too big for me to wear, I am only doing what I know best for my fatherland and I have not done anything yet. I still have a lot to do to get to the height reached by such a legend.

The fans have to wait before I can accept that tag but for now, I am thinking about making the name ‘Emenike’ bigger than the late legend Rashidi Yekini, but I won’t rush my race. I will keep delivering when I am given the chance to serve my country.

Despite the defeat in Addis Ababa, the Ethiopians are still very much confident of getting Brazil 2014 ticket..

They are saying that because it is football where anything can happen, but we won't allow that to happen. I don't believe in exchanging words on a match that has not been played. I can vouch for my team mates but I think we must see every game like war.

Ethiopia are very good and they will be coming here with other tricks. So we shouldn't see this victory as the end of road.

I can tell you that Calabar game will be tougher for us than Addis Ababa. We will be careful and get ready for another big business in Calabar.

You have played six games for Fenerbahce and yet to score a goal, are you under pressure to score goals?

No, as I said earlier, I never play under pressure. I am sure my goals will soon start rolling in for Fenerbahce. I am just doing my best for my team. I will soon make the fans happy with my goals.

ASUU Strike Has Increased Prostitution, Group Alleges

COALITION of Civil Society Organizations, Market women and students have staged a protest with placards of different inscriptions at the Federal Capital Territory, FCT, Abuja, over the continuous strike by the Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, alleging that the strike has increased prostitution in the country.
The group which noted that the strike was entering the fourth month appealed to the Nigerian Labour Congress, NLC, the Trade Union Congress, TUC and appealed to the union to call off the strike in the interest of Nigerians.
Some of the placards read, “ASUU please save our young girls from prostitution, NLC, TUC and NUPENG mediate now, Stop playing politics with our future, This ASUU strike has lost its tactics, ASUU please save our future.” Though, the group in some of the placards had accused the striking university teachers of being selfish and too rigid in their demands, in what looked like a contradiction, the groups also said that the demands were germane and for the good of the education system.
Delivering a letter to the NLC President at the Labour House, the leader of the protest and Executive Director of Conscience Nigeria, Comrade Tosin Adeyanju said that they decided to embark on the protest to appeal to the labour leaders to mediate on the lingering face-off between ASUU and the Federal Government that had led to the continuous closure of public universities in the country.
Comrade Adeyanjul said, “We embarked on this protest today to further appeal to all major stakeholders in the Nigeria project and we deem it fit to come to the labour house because of the strategic importance that labour represents in this country. “For almost 100 days, our students, our dependants, our children have been locked out of our ivory towers and nothing has changed. We are here to appeal to the labour leaders in this country to come and mediate on the lingering and prolonged ASUU strikes.
“We are not unaware on the germane and relevant issues raised by ASUU, there is need for our institutions to be revitalized, there is need for improved research, there is need for improved allowance, there is need for infrastructural development in ivory towers, but all over the world no country has been able to meet the demands of labour unions 100 per cent.” “With the information available to us, we are aware that the federal government proposed and has given ASUU a 100 billion initial fund requested for different issues in the various universities.
We are aware that ASUU appealed for more money to be given on the earned allowance and 30 billion was given for earned allowance as at today about 130 billion has been given to ASUU.”
Receiving the protesters, President of NLC, Abduwaheed Omar, represented by the Chief Economist of NLC, Dr. Peter Ozo’eson said that the labour leaders had initiated moves by writing to the Federal government about four times on how to mediate but government had not responded to their letters.

FIFA U-17: Mexico 1 - 6 Nigeria

Three-time champions Nigeria left little to doubt when they opened their FIFA U-17 World Cup campaign against twice champions and holders Mexico in Al Ain, winning out by an emphatic 6-1 scoreline.
The result piles more unhappiness on the Mexican nation, whose senior team is experiencing a crisis in senior FIFA World Cup qualifying, while Nigeria sit comfy and cozy at the top of Group F.
Nigeria looked nervous early, but the Mexicans were unable to take advantage of their opponents’ trepidation. Striker Ulises Jaimes had a chance to score with his head after only three minutes, but the ball was deflected wide of danger by the scrambling Nigerian defence.
With a half-hour gone, and after a few more Mexican half-chances, the Africans had settled into their rhythm. That was bad news for Mexico. With 33 minutes gone, the speedy Golden Eaglets were through on a counter-attack. Success Isaac, who seven times in the African qualifiers, raced in and rounded the goalkeeper, pulling the ball back across goal. Kelechi Iheanacho followed the play and produced a clever finish, hitting the ball high into the net to get over a pair of Mexican defenders.
Seven minutes later, the No10 – hands-down the best player on the pitch – scored again. The pattern was the same, Isaac crossing from the left after a fast-break and Iheanacho keeping his cool again, cutting inside and showing great patience to drift past two defender and slam into the side netting.
The Nigerians celebrated wildly in front of their large banks of fans, but their enthusiasm got the better of them as they conceded a goal a minute later. Still in dreamland, the African defenders failed to clear their lines and the ball fell kindly for Jaimes in the area, with the Morelia youngster rounding his man to score low in the corner.
The Mexican euphoria couldn’t last, however, and Iheanacho had his hat-trick seconds into the second-half. With the ball flicked on from a long throw-in, the livewire slammed it home, low and hard, at the near post to make it 3-0 for the rampaging Nigerians. It was 4-0 three minutes later, when Chidiebere Nwakali fired the ball in from 25 yards out, signaling a certain rout as the Negerian fans chanted for more, more, more.
Isaac provided it on the hour-mark when he raced on to a through-ball, bamboozled two tired and devastated Mexican defenders and fired inside the near post from 12 yards out. With 30 minutes to go, the irrepressible Iheanacho bagged his fourth goal. He cut in from the right side and fired a vicious strike from a long way out that Gudino got his finger-tips to, but had no chance of keeping out of the top corner to make the final score a frightening 6-1.
Up next for the impressive Nigerians is a date with Scandinavian debutants Sweden in three days’ time, when Mexico try to get things back on track against Iraq.

'Why I Was Unhappy Under Sir Alex Ferguson ' - Wayne Rooney

Wayne Rooney has revealed he was unhappy at Manchester United under Sir Alex Ferguson because he felt he was being played out of position.
photo Wayne Rooney has revealed he was unhappy at Manchester United under Sir Alex Ferguson because he felt he was being played out of position.
Rooney says he was fed up with being played in midfield, but insists that he is now happy and settled under new manager David Moyes, who is fielding him up front.
Although Ferguson's name was not mentioned as Rooney spoke of the frustrations he felt at being repeatedly selected out of position, it was clear the major difference at United this season is Moyes occupying the manager's chair.
"You can clearly see I'm playing and I'm happy in my football," said Rooney. "David Moyes has come in, he's playing me up front, and I'm enjoying it.
"I've had no problem playing out of position in the past, but I'm a forward and I felt I deserved the right to play in my position.
"That wasn't happening. Naturally I was a bit disappointed and maybe that affected some of the games I played because last season wasn't my best.
"Everyone at the club knew where I wanted to play. Maybe I will play in midfield when I'm a bit older if I have lost my legs a bit but I didn't want to play there.
"I'm not saying I am going to throw my arms up in the air and not do it if we were hanging on a bit in the last 10 minutes of a game and I got asked to drop back. But there came a point where I had to be a bit selfish for my own career."
Rooney's contractual situation - he has less than two years to run on his current deal - is also uncertain, and he stopped short of confirming he wants to stay at Old Trafford beyond this season.
"To be honest I've been settled all summer," he said. "I know from the outside looking in it might not have seemed like that, but I have.
"I spoke with the people who matter at the club and we knew what we were doing. The club made that clear.
"My wife had a new child and I've been really happy. I'm not going to go on saying I wanted to stay or I wanted to leave.
"I just want to concentrate on my football. We'll see what happens after that."

BREAKING NEWS: 15 People Died, Among Them Two Children, Five Survived In Lagos Plane Crash (UPDATED, PHOTOS, VIDEO)

The number of people killed in a plane crash in Lagos has increased up to 15, two children among them. Five survivors are in hospital. The plane carrying 27 people and conveying the body of the former Ondo State governor, Olusegun Agagu, crashed this morning at the Murtala Muhammed airport in Lagos immediately after take-off.
photo
The charter flight took off at about 09:30 from the domestic terminal at Lagos Murtala Mohammed International Airport.
Officials said the plane crashed on to open land within the airport complex close to a fuel storage a minute after take-off.
Spokesman for the Nigerian Airspace Management Agency (NAMA), Supo Atobatele, added that the engine of the jet had failed on takeoff and it crash-landed and burst into flames.
Aviation Ministry spokesman, Joe Obi, added that the plane nose-dived into a building in the area: "The plane couldn't lift properly so it just came down."
Spokesperson of the Federal Airport Authority of Nigeria, Yakubu Datti, told Al Jazeera that there are five survivors. They have been rushed to a nearby hospital, he added.
Datti confirmed that the Black Box of the aircraft have been recovered and investigation will commence immediately.
One of the eyewitnesses, Ahmad Safian, told the BBC: "I heard a loud bang and then there was lots of black smoke. The security forces rushed straight to the scene. I saw three bodies removed from the wreckage."
He also said the road to the airport was blocked for a short time but operations were continuing as normal at the airport.
The passengers
An Associated Airline jet was carrying seven crew and 20 passengers heading to Akure, Ondo state for the burial of former Ondo State governor, Olusegun Agagu, who passed away September 13, 2013.
Agagu's family members and Ondo state officials were in the plane. Two of Agagu’s children, a son and a daughter, did not survive. However, ex-governor's wife was not in the plane crash; she and Agagu’s brother, Femi, arrived Akure earlier in a separate flight.
The jet was also conveying the corpse of Agagu. The casket carrying his corpse was found intact in the rubble of plane.
While the plane was about to leave the Lagos airport, Ondo State government officials, including Governor Olusegun Mimiko, as well as other members of Agagu’s family gathered at the Akure airport waiting for the corpse of the former governor. They have moved to the Ondo government house after hearing of the tragedy.
