BREAKING NEWS: FG Gives ASUU 1 Week Ultimatum To Call Off Strike

BREAKING NEWS: FG Gives ASUU 1 Week Ultimatum To Call Off Strike

Photo: Federal Government
Today the Federal Government gave the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), one week ultimatum to call off the lingering lecturers' strike.
The acting Minister of Education, Nyesom Wike, stated this while briefing journalists in Abuja.
It was gathered  that the government has also ordered Vice Chancellors of Universities to declare the jobs of the striking lecturers vacant as from Wednesday, December 4.
Wike called the ongoing varsity teachers’ strike as “act of sabotage.”
“The continuation of the strike despite several meetings, especially with President Goodluck Jonathan is an attempt by the union to sabotage all efforts by government to address the issue," he said.
The minister disclosed that government has met all its commitments and obligations with respect to the agreement.
According to his words, government took the decision to reopen the universities following ASUU’s new conditions which are “not tenable. “
His words:
"On November 4, 2013 President Goodluck Jonathan met with ASUU executive, labour union leaders from the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC), where all the issues were resolved and firm commitments made to address the lingering crisis. “It is noteworthy that Mr. President’s gesture was more than sufficient to guarantee the commitment of government to address all issues raised at the meeting with Mr. President.
"At the end of the meeting, the ASUU team promised to convene a meeting of its National Executive Committee to present the resolutions reached and report back by Friday November 8, 2013. It is unfortunate that while travelling to attend the NEC meeting in Kano, we lost a key member and former President of the union, Prof. Festus Iyayi.
"Government sympathizes with the family of the late Iyayi and ASUU. It is however amazing that three weeks after the meeting with Mr. President, ASUU responded by giving new conditions for suspending the five month old strike. I have never seen anywhere in any country where you sit down with Mr. President.
"That is the highest level of discussion. If you cannot believe Mr. President then who else will you believe?”
“Any academic staff who fails to resume on or before the 4th of December, 2013 automatically ceases to be a staff of the institution
“Vice-Chancellors are also directed to advertise vacancies (internal and external) in their institutions.
“The National Universities Commission is hereby directed to monitor the compliance of these directives by the various institutions.
“The Federal Government has met all its Commitment and obligations with respect to the FG/ASUU 2009 Agreement. We appeal to all stakeholders to appreciate the position of Government which is in the best interest of our dear country.”

ILL HEALTH: Jonathan Postpones Meeting With Rebel Governors

President Goodluck Jonathan on Sunday postponed his peace meeting with the seven aggrieved Peoples Democratic Party governors which was earlier scheduled for Sunday.
photo
Jonathan, who arrived the Presidential Wing of the Nnamdi Azikwe International Airport, Abuja from London around 7pm attributed his action to jet lag and “health challenges.”
But The PUNCH however gathered   that pressure from political hawks  made the President, who was in  London  for  the 15th meeting  of Nigeria’s    Honorary International Investors’ Council, to postpone the meeting.
It was learnt in Abuja that the hawks within the PDP,  who insisted that Jonathan should shelve the meeting,    also   wanted   the four suspended  leaders of the New PDP- Prince Olagunsoye Oyinlola,  Alhaji Abubakar Kawu Baraje, Dr.  Sam Jaja and Ambassador Ibrahim Kazaure -  expelled from the ruling party.
Our source said  this could happen on or before Friday this week.
A reliably PDP source told one of our correspondents on Sunday that the need to have an enlarged secret caucus meeting with the President on the modalities to be adopted before taking a final decision on “Oyinlola and others ” was responsible for the President’s decision to shelve the Sunday meeting.
Some of the rebel governors  were said to have  arrived  in Abuja before the postponement  was announced  by Jonathan.
The President  became indisposed and had to be treated for severe abdominal pains while in London .
He had   missed  the opening of the London meeting based on doctors’ advice that he should take some days’ rest.
However, he   gave an indication  to  journalists on his arrival that the meeting with the rebel governors  might hold within the week.
The President said the peace moves would continue since political discussion is a continuous process.
Jonathan said, “I don’t think I will be able to hold any meeting. You know six hours’ flight is quite a distance and also following from my health challenges;  but we will meet.”
When asked specifically on the next meeting date, the President said, “I don’t know. I am just coming in. I believe within the week, we will be able to meet.
“Politics is about discussion. We belong to the same political party. Even people from different political parties engage in political discussion  and  you know political discussion  is a continous process. So we will continue to discuss.”

ASUU STRIKE: We Will Not End The Strike Until..

The Academic Staff Union of Universities has said it will not suspend its ongoing strike until the four months salaries owed its members are paid.
photo
The union also wants the immediate implementation of the N1.2tn offer by the Federal Government to public universities, starting with the release of N100bn this year. The balance of N1.1tn is to be spread over five years from 2014.
These were some of the resolutions reached by members of the National Executive Council of the union who converged on Kano on Friday to deliberate on whether to call off the over four- month-old industrial action or not.
A source, who was privy to the resolutions  reached during the President Goodluck Jonathan – ASUU leadership meeting three weeks ago, told The PUNCH on Sunday,  that  the fresh demands were some of the issues to be tabled before Jonathan by  the leadership  during their next meeting. A date for the meeting is yet to be fixed.
According to the source, a strong commitment to  two demands, among other pending issues, must be obtained from the President before the  industrial action will be called off by the union.
He said, “The issue now is  on trust and we do not want a situation where promises will not be kept. The authorities have failed us in the past and we do not want a repeat of that.
”That was why we decided at the NEC meeting that the government should pay us the arrears of salaries being owed us since we started the strike on July1 before the strike can be called off. The salaries should not be paid piecemeal.
“We also insist that the Federal Government should start the implementation of the offer made to us when we met the President some weeks ago.
“For instance, the N100bn he (Jonathan) agreed to inject into the university system in 2013 should be released to the universities immediately. So, we decided  that before the strike could be called off, these two conditions and others must be met not by promises but by real action.”
The NEC members, who  met behind closed doors  at the Bayero University, Kano, were said to have reviewed the reports of the various university congresses on the strike.

Yar’Adua Was Poisoned By Obasanjo's Kitchen Staff! — Professor Ukandi G. Damachi

Nigeria's Former President Ibrahim Babangida long term confidant Professor Ukandi G. Damachi had allegedlly told the United states council that former president Yar'Adua was poisoned by Ex President Obasanjo's Kitchen staff.
According to Wiki leaks Professor Ukandi G. Damachi who is a friend to the US consul, He told them in secrecy about the alleged poisoning.

Professor Ukandi G. Damachi is a friend to US consul, long term confidant to Nigeria’s past president Ibrahim Badamosi Babangida with privy to Nigeria’s government workings inside information.
The Wikileaks cable, reference ID 08LAGOS153, described in Professor Damachi’s narration, that late president Yar’Adua was given poison in his food, “his food was poisoned”, he alleged. Further stating that the president inherited his predecessor, president Obasanjo’s kitchen, and these kitchen staff were likely used to poison Nigeria’s president. The professor further revealed that when president Yar’Adua realized this he fired the Obasanjo kitchen staff.
He Said: “There are lots of problems in Nigeria.” The first problem, he said, is the President’s illness; “his food was poisoned”, Damachi alleged. Asked whether he meant “food poisoning” or that someone had deliberately poisoned the President’s food, Damachi shrugged, replying “The President inherited Obasanjo’s kitchen staff”; Yar’Adua has now fired them all, and the kitchen has been cleaned out following the incident, Damachi said.At the same time, Damachi went on, the President did attend functions on both the Saturday and Sunday preceding his illness and ate some food at both of them. “What President eats at a function?”, Damachi asked rhetorically. The President was so sick that the day he signed the budget, he was unable to sign a second piece of legislation awaiting his approval…”
Late Yar’Adua Yar’Adua was known to have stepped hard on his predecessors toes. Upon entering office president Yar’Adua, described by his wife as a very honest man who left no wealth behind; seriously went after the reversal of Nigeria’s public assets that his predecessor had sold to his allies, Aliku Dangote and Femi Otedola.
“In the weeks leading up to Obasanjo’s departure, Dangote’s privately held company has also scooped up a cement plant, a telecoms licence and mining concessions in a rush of privatisations that has triggered accusations of cronyism by opposition parties.”
By July of 2007, barely 2 months into office, Yar’Adua had held meetings with Bureau for Public Enterprises (BPE), to querry the sale of Nigeria’s refineries to Obasanjo’s henchmen, Aliku Dangote and tycoon Otedola. BPE reportedly justified the sale to Bluestar, saying it was transparent, but the Nigeria National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) faulted it, and maintained that the corporation was capable of running them efficiently.
President Yar’Adua “after considering the facts presented to him, the President directed that the sale should be revoked as the exercise was not transparent enough. The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) praised President Yar’Adua for the revocation of the privatization of the refineries.” Dangote And former president Obasanjo Dangote And former president Obasanjo President Yar’Adua, determined to recover Nigeria’s infrastructure and assets coveted by Obasanjo and his cronies, moved on to other government assets.
Yar’Adua also suffered from chronic allergic disorder and this was easily attributed to be the direct cause of his death.
The possibility of the poisoning to death of a Nigerian serving head of State will amount to a grievous crime. The exhumation of late President Yar’Adua’s body may be necessitated as well as a thorough investigation of ll who may have been involved in the murder of a president in office.
Late Palestinian premier, Yasser Arafat was recently exhumed due to evidence of polonium poisoning as an investigation into alleged Israeli intelligence poisoning was reopened.

Keshi Hails Eagle's Display

Nigeria coach Stephen Keshi praised his players for shrugging off the effects of jetlag and fatigue to hold Italy to a 2-2 draw in an entertaining friendly in London.
Monday’s game at Fulham’s Craven Cottage came barely 48 hours after the African champions had secured their place at next year’s World Cup with a 2-0 victory over Ethiopia in the second leg of a qualifying play-off.
A much-changed side fell behind to a 12th-minute goal by Giuseppe Rossi but hit back through Bright Dike and Shola Ameobi, only for Italy midfielder Emanuele Giaccherini to restore parity early in the second half. “After 48 hours, playing a World Cup qualifying match and flying right away here, they did good,” Keshi said.
“Without sleeping, and we didn’t get to do any training before this game. I’m happy.” The World Cup in Brazil is still seven months away, but Keshi does not foresee any major upheaval regarding the composition of his squad during that period.
“This is the fifth or sixth time I’m taking the same team to play my game,” he said. “Most of them are going to be there (in Brazil), if there’s no injuries. I pray there’s no injuries.
But I still need some (new) players in the team, to make the team more solid.” United States-born Dike, 26, had previously scored for Nigeria in an unofficial friendly against Catalonia in January, but his 35th-minute header against Italy was his first goal in a full international match.
While Nigeria threatened to snatch victory on a couple of occasions in the second half, Italy twice hit the woodwork in the latter stages, and Dike said the performance showed room for improvement.
“It was a little mixed,” said the Toronto FC forward. “We had some really good moments, we had some bad moments, but that’s what soccer is.
They had us on our back-heels at times, we had them on their back-heels. “So hopefully we keep getting better and keep helping each other and pushing each other to the next level.”
Captain Vincent Enyeama told the BBC in the aftermath of his side’s victory over Ethiopia that Nigeria could win next year’s tournament, but he was more circumspect after the draw with Italy.
Asked how far Nigeria could go, the Lille goalkeeper would only say: “As far as possible. Until I know the opponent, then I will start talking. For now: as far as possible.”

Final official update
The Lagos State Police Command confirmed the death of one pupil in an auto crash.
According to the Police Public Relations Officer in the state, Ngozi Braide, 2 other kids, who were injured in the accident, were receiving treatment in an unnamed hospital.
On Monday morning the water tanker ran into the pupils who were on their way to school, where about five pupils were feared to have been crushed by the reckless water truck driver.
Braide said, “Today being, November 8, 2013 at about 8am, Ajah Police Division received a distress call that there was a fatal motor accident.
The DPO in company with the DTO rushed to the scene. Upon arrival they discovered that it was an accident involving one Blue Mercedez water tanker(truck) with number plate XZ87JJJ and a black Toyota Prado SUV, marked CB690AKD.
Preliminary investigation showed that Prado SUV gave way to children, while the water tanker ran into kids killing one of them.
“Based on the foregoing, the residents, youths and indigenes got infuriated and barricaded the Lekki-Ajah expressway. They attributed their grievance to incessant accidents and lack of a pedestrian bridge, which they had been asking for," he added.

Nigeria Banks To Shutdown Nationwide

A major crisis looms in the financial sector, as all banks in the country may shut their doors to customers anytime this week, as their chief executive officers (CEOs) move to protest the continued detention of their staff by the Department of State Security (DSS).

photo
Daily Sun gathered that the CEOs are irked by the arrest and detention of several key officials of no fewer than 13 banks over the last two weeks by security operatives, saying that this has not only crippled their operations but also poses a great risk if normal banking operations continues.
The 13 banks directly affected by the arrests are Zenith Bank, Access Bank, Fidelity Bank, Unity Bank, First City Monument Bank (FCMB), First Bank Plc, Skye Bank, Sterling Bank, Diamond Bank, Ecobank, Wema Bank, Guaranty Trust Bank and CitiBank.
The arrest of the bank officials are linked to money laundering case against the Jigawa State governor, Alhaji Sule Lamido, a key member of the G7 governors, who is also one of the arrowheads of the New PDP believed to be opposed to President Goodluck Jonathan’s rumoured second term ambition.
The DSS is said to be investigating questionable transactions involving the governor and two of his sons, Aminu and Mustapha, who is the District Head of Bamaina, their hometown. While the governor is said to have escaped arrest, as a result of his constitutional immunity, his two sons were arrested last week by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC). However, it is the DSS that is handling the case of the bankers.
According to the DSS, following the arrest of Aminu, last year, at the Aminu Kano International Airport Kano, for failing to make full declaration of the $50, 000 he had on him while trying to board a flight to Egypt, where his wife was receiving treatment, further investigation of the sources of income of the governor’s son revealed huge transactions involving the movement of Jigawa State funds into accounts of companies in which both the governor and his two sons are believed to have interest. The amount involved, according to the DSS, is about N10 billion.
The DSS had subsequently swooped on the 13 banks in which the companies have accounts and even obtained a court order to freeze the accounts. Also, it had begun a systematic arrest and detention of senior officials of the bank in the last two weeks.
While not questioning the powers of the DSS to arrest anybody, a source close to one of the bank chief executive told Daily Sun yesterday that the CEOs were worried that the bankers have been held without arraignment, for over two weeks, a clear violation of their rights.
“The laws of the country say that nobody can be detained for more than 48 hours without been charged to court,” the source said, adding: “Some of them have now been detained for 16 days without access to their families or lawyers. They are being held incommunicado.”
According to him, the bank chiefs, some of who met last weekend, are saying that they might not have any other choice than to shut down operations, as some of the officials being detained are key to their operations.
“One of those arrested is a director. Some others are risk managers, fraud control and detection officers, zonal and regional coordinators and key IT experts. There are compliance managers among the arrested. There are also account officers, branch managers, chief inspectors and heads of treasury among those arrested. To continue to operate without these key personnel could expose depositors’ funds to serious danger. So, the bank CEOs are thinking it might be safer to close shop to secure depositors’ funds and reduce expose to a possible collapse of the nation’s banking system,” the senior bank sour said.
Apart from the risk of possible compromise of the system, the bank chiefs are also frowning at the propriety of the DSS action. They fear that, unlike the EFCC and the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), which have the wherewithal to investigate bank transactions and fraud, the DSS may not be threading on a familiar turf.
The source said: “The banks daily, and statutorily, report transactions and fraud alerts to both the EFCC and the CBN. If there is any suspicion over such transactions, the DSS can crosscheck and verify with both the EFCC and the CBN. It is rather shocking that the investigation of transactions by companies of the sons of the Jigawa State governor would warrant such mindless and elaborate disruption of banking operations in 13 banks, which is what this arrest and continued detention of these critical bank official amount.”
Another source close to a bank CEO said the manner of arrest was an issue also. According to him, the idea of literally kidnapping these bankers and traumatising their families is particularly unfair.
“Even though none of the officials was said to have resisted arrest or refused to co-operate with the security operative, the security personnel still hounded them down like common criminals. Some were aroused from sleep, with machine guns pointed at them and their family members,” the source stated.
He particularly pointed to a case in Lagos, where the child of the affected officer was rudely awoken from sleep by scores of gun-wielding operatives, who were turning their home upside-down, allegedly searching for documents.
According to him, another of the bankers arrested in Lagos was eventually moved to Abuja in a military aircraft.
He said the bank chiefs, who are seriously considering the option of closing shop and going on strike may make true their threat anytime between today and Wednesday, to secure depositors’ funds, which, he said, have been exposed to grave danger, by the arrests.
When contacted on the development last night, a highly placed officer of the DSS said the service was unmoved by the threat of the strike,
“I dare them to try it. Nigeria will not collapse. We might be forced to go public with information we have on what they are doing, both the governors and the bank chiefs. If you tell Nigerians the whole truth the citizens of some of these states would want to stone their governors. It’s not only the Jigawa case. Many governors are also into it. Also, it is not about, nor is it restricted to G7 governors. It cuts across.”
On the propriety of the DSS investigating and arresting bankers, the officials directed the CEOs to the statues setting up the service.
“Our brief covers what we are doing. We are empowered to investigate both security and financial crimes that could have security implications,” he insisted.
He further asked: “How can somebody steal as much as N75billion that has the capacity to upturn the entire economy and you say you can’t investigate?”
He said that era of people using strike and all manner of threat to blackmail security officials from uncovering their dubious ways have passed. “Let them go on strike and we would get our bosses to address a press conference to go public with what we have uncovered,” he fired back.
Daily Sun gathered that the law actually empowers DSS to probe financial crime. Instrument 1 of May 1999 empowers the service to carry out the prevention, detection and investigation of: a) Threat of espionage; b) threat of subversion; c) threat of sabotage; d) economic crimes of national security dimension; e) terrorist activities; f) separatist and inter-group conflicts; g) threat to law and order.
All efforts to get the CBN to comment on the development proved abortive, as calls to the line of the apex bank’s governor kept saying it was switched off.
Similarly, he was yet to reply an SMS to that effect as at press time last night.

Anambra Election Is A Mockery Of Democracy – Ngige Blasts INEC

The All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate in the Anambra State governorship election, Dr. Chris Ngige, has described the election which took place on Saturday in the state as a mockery of democracy.
At a world press conference which he addressed Sunday morning in Awka, capital of the state, Ngige said the exercise was “systematically and scientifically rigged.”
“It is unfortunate, we are toying with the future. We are destroying the hope of those coming behind. Our children will one day rise up and ask why they were born in this part of the world. I weep for Nigeria. This generation has decided not to bequeath anything good to coming generations, “he stated.
He said from what the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has done, it has taken a step forward and three backwards. He alleged that the irregularities that characterized the 2010 governorship election through the manipulation of the voters register, delay of materials to strongholds of particular candidates, restriction of results sheets and use of violence were repeated on Saturday.
He rejected the rerun in the 65 units in Obosi, saying it was the height of disregard for God and the faith of the people to fix election on a day of worship. He wondered if any election would be fixed on a Friday at 1.00 pm in any northern state of the country.
Ngige hinted that the APC may subsequently ask for a total cancellation of the whole exercise given that the issue of manipulated voters’ register was noticed throughout the state.
He also said the APC will explore the legal options open to it in the Electoral Act as amended to seek redress.
“Nobody knows where we will go to from here in 2015. As it is, we will ask for a total cancellation of the entire exercise giving the degree of fraud, especially the question of result sheets not being sent with other sensitive materials. There is provision for us to seek redress from the Tribunal to the Appeal Court down to the Supreme Court and we will take full advantage of this,” he said.

Students' Hope Dashed As ASUU Strike Might Go On Indefinitely

Leaders of the Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, yesterday, suspended indefinitely the union’s National Executive Council, NEC, meeting planned to hold in Kano over the tragic auto-crash that claimed the life of ASUU former President, Professor Festus Iyayi, on Tuesday morning.
photo
Thousands of students who had kept vigil, waiting for the outcome of ASUU NEC meeting, therefore went home disappointed following the announcement of the suspension of the meeting.
The accident which involved the convoy of Governor Idris Wada of Kogi State on Lokoja-Abuja Road also left two other officials of ASUU – Dr. Ngozi Ilo, National Welfare Officer, University of Benin, UNIBEN; branch chairman, Dr. Anthony Emina, and their driver, critically injured.
President of ASUU, Dr. Nasir Fagge, who announced the suspension of the NEC meeting in Kano, explained that the union had to suspend the meeting following the sudden and tragic death of Professor Festus Iyayi.
The NEC meeting was widely expected to make a decisive statement on the five-month old ASUU strike that has crippled academic activities in the public university system.
At a briefing, Fagge told reporters in Kano that “we are compelled to postpone this meeting in the light of the sudden death of one of our strongest pillars who died yesterday (Tuesday).
“As you can see for yourself, we are mourning the departure of this great scholar and you would agree with me that in this circumstance we cannot look at issues objectively.”
The ASUU President who looked visibly shocked by the unfortunate development, described Iyayi “as a strong pillar of the union,’ stressing that “this is a great loss to the entire country.”
Over 50 universities were represented at the botched Kano NEC meeting which was to deliberate on the outcome of the branch meetings held recently that was key to the decision on suspension of the strike.
No new date has been fixed for the NEC meeting.
However, labour watchers are of the opinion that ASUU may not reschedule the NEC meeting until after the burial of the late professor.
Thousands of students that had kept vigil waiting for the outcome went home disappointed following the announcement of the suspension of the NEC meeting.
A student who spoke with Vanguard on condition of anonymity, said, “this is a clear indication that we have more days to spend at home because the figure that passed on was an icon and a respected voice.”
He expressed disappointment that the Federal Government had not arrested those that caused the fatal accident, stressing that “the only thing that can cool frayed nerves is to put on trial all those that played infamous roles in the accident.”

IYAYI'S DEATH: ASUU Leaders Chase Kogi Governor Away From Hospital

Angry leaders of the Academic Staff Union of Universities allegedly chased away the Governor of Kogi State, Captain Idris Wada (retd.) from the emergency ward of the Lokoja General Hospital on Tuesday.
photo
Wada had gone to the hospital  to visit their  injured colleague, Dr. Ngozi Ilo, and commiserate with them over the death of their  former President, Prof. Festus Iyayi,   in an accident involving his convoy  and an ASUU vehicle on Tuesday.
The  Chairman, University of Benin chapter  of ASUU, Dr. Anthony Monye-Emina; and the Benin Zonal Coordinator, Dr. Sunny Iyalo, had minor injuries and were therefore not admitted into the hospital.
The   ASUU leaders, including the National President, Dr. Biodun Ogunyemi;  the Ibadan Zonal Coordinator, Dr. Nassir Adesola; the Chairman, Lagos State University chapter of the union, Dr. Adekunle Idris;    Monye-Emina;   Iyalo  and lecturers from the Federal University Lokoja however sent the governor away from the hospital’s emergency ward.
Their grouse was Wada’s  late response to the accident and the uncaring attitude he allegedly displayed towards the union leaders  involved in the accident.
They also accused him of trying to make a political gain out of their misfortune.
Idris, who confirmed that  Wada was chased out of the  emergency ward, said,    “We are surprised that a state governor could resort to telling lies because contrary to the claim by his spokesperson that he showed care towards our colleagues, he did not.
“Somebody that did not stop after his convoy killed our leader; somebody that did not come to the hospital until some minutes to 5pm(on Tuesday) after the accident that happened around 11am could not be said to be caring.
“That was why we chased him out of the emergency ward of the hospital and we also prevented him from seeing Prof. Iyayi’s corpse in the mortuary.
“We are not happy with the fact that he came very late to the hospital and the fact that when he came, his press crew attempted to take photograph and video record of Dr. Ilo, who is our national welfare  secretary. We stopped them because that was  the  height of insensitivity.
“Somebody that could not provide us with an ambulance cannot be said to be caring. We had to call UNIBEN for an ambulance that took Ilo to the UNIBEN Teaching Hospital while our colleagues from the Federal University, Lokoja, with the assistance of the vice-chancellor, gave us the ambulance that was used to convey the remains of Prof. Iyayi to Benin.”
Idris added that though Wada  left the hospital “like a gentleman,”  some of  his overzealous  security aides tried  to be naughty.
He said, “Some of the policemen  that followed him to the hospital wanted to be naughty but we lectured them. The hospital workers and the residents of Lokoja who witnessed how we chased the governor  away were happy.”
Also, Adesola expressed dismay at  the efforts  made by the governor to rewrite the incident.
He said, “It was actually the last of the governor’s convoy that veered off the road and ran into a  vehicle that was conveying Iyayi and others.
“When the governor’s convoy came  with   noise and harassment, everyone on the road moved  to the side  of the road for them to pass  but  unfortunately, the governor’s aide  has told the world that an  ASUU  vehicle was avoiding a trailer and ran into  their escort vehicle.
“What manner of reckless lying is that? The front  of the ASUU bus remains  intact except for the windscreen that broke. Iyayi was sitting at the back of the bus and the  escort van  ran into it.
The most annoying part is  that the incident occurred around 11am and the governor did not even visit the hospital until around 5pm.
“He  came with a large  number of pressmen and security aides  and was attempting to make some political capital out of our misfortune.
“We actually had to chase him away from the emergency ward where our welfare secretary was still receiving treatment .”
But Jacob Edi, the Special Adviser, Media and Strategy to  Wada,  claimed that the ASUU leaders did not chase his boss away from the hospital.
Edi, who in a telephone interview  with one of our correspondents, insisted that Wada  was not indifferent to the plight  of the   accident victims, however, stated that the union officials were not  friendly.
He said, “When the governor went  to the hospital, the ASUU people   had a kind of adverse reaction to the governor.    But they did not chase away the governor. Nobody chased away anybody.”
The governor’s spokesman  added that the state government would not want to be involved in controversy over  the death of the former ASUU president.
He stated that Wada was pained by  the accident and had been sympathising with the bereaved families  and  the survivors.
It was however not only the ASUU leaders that   lambasted  the governor  over  the accident, the Nigeria Labour Congress, a former President of the Trade Union Congress, Mr. Peter Esele and an ex-Commissioner of Police in Lagos State, Mr. Abubakar Tsav, also  did.
They  described Wada’s convoy as reckless and   demanded the prosecution of the  driver  of the escort vehicle that   caused the accident on the Lokoja-Abuja Road.
The NLC,  in a statement in Abuja by its National President, Mr. Abdulwahed Omar, described the death of Iyayi as avoidable.
It  also blamed the Federal Government for its neglect of  the road.
The NLC said its  position  was  that the federal   and   Kogi State governments  were responsible for   Iyayi’s death.
It  said that 10 years after the contract for the rehabilation of the  Lokoja-Abuja Road was awarded,  it  had been turned to a death trap.
The NLC  said,  “Iyayi’s death leaves a sour taste in the mouth and it is totally avoidable. It is blameable, lawlessness/impunity on the part of the Kogi State governor, who is fast acquiring for himself an accident-prone reputation.
The congress therefore advised  “siren-blowing and terror-dealing convoys” to  be conscious of other road users.
It  called on the Federal Roads Safety Corps and the Nigeria Police to ensure that those behind the  accident  were brought to justice.
Esele and Tsav    urged the relevant authorities to ensure that the convoy driver involved in the accident was prosecuted.
They spoke in different telephone interviews with   our correspondents.
According to them, Wada has a responsibility to caution his drivers as his convoy has become reputed for recklessness.
Esele recalled that the convoy of the governor was involved in  an  accident which resulted in the death of  Wada’s Aide de Camp and in which Wada was also injured.
Tsav,  who described the death of the former ASUU leader as unfortunate, called on President Goodluck Jonathan to meet the demands of ASUU.
This, he said, would be  in appreciation of the fact that Iyayi died while contributing to the development of university education in the country.
Tsav said that   accidents occurred in Kogi State not because the roads in Kogi were the worst but because the drivers in the governor’s convoy were not cautious.
He said that the roads were not meant only for the political office holders but   for  all Nigerians.
He said, “The convoy of Wada is known for being reckless; this is not the first time this is happening. It does not mean that the worst roads are in Kogi State.
“I want to appeal to him to caution his drivers, they are reckless, he should caution them to be cautious on the roads, the roads belong  to every Nigerian.”

5 Boko Haram Sectants, 2 Soldiers Killed In Fresh Kano Shootout

photo - UPDATE: 5 Boko Haram Sectants, 2 Soldiers Killed In Fresh Kano Shootout
Kano - Two soldiers and five suspected Boko Haram extremists were killed in shootouts early Saturday morning on the outskirts of Kano. Items recovered during the operation include two AK 47 rifles, 458 rounds of 7.62 special and six AK 47 rifle magazines.
Army Captain Ikedichi Iweha, spokesman for the security forces' combined Joint Task Force, said the suspects were planning simultaneous suicide attacks in the Nigerian capital Abuja and Kano.
In an email sent to reporters, Iweha said "intelligence available indicates that the terrorists were in the process of finalizing plans."
Iweha said security is being tightened in Kano, amid fears that insurgents are fleeing to the city from the three northeastern states currently under emergency rule.
Soldiers and agents of the Department of Security Services (DSS) engaged in a shootout with the terrorist sect cell during security raids Hotoro Dan'marke and Brigade Quarters.
"Sequel to the series of cordon and search operations being carried out by the Joint Task Force (JTF) and the men of the DSS in Kano, complementing the ongoing operations by troops in the North Eastern axis of the country, the JTF wishes to keep the general public abreast with developments," Iweha, the spokesman, said via statement.
"In the early hours of Saturday, 9 November 2013, at about 0300 hours to be precise, a combined team of the JTF and DSS personnel stormed two residences at Hotoro Dan Marke and Brigade general areas. In the resulting shootout, five terrorists and two soldiers lost their lives. Intelligence available indicates that the terrorists were in the process of finalizing plans to carry out simultaneous suicide attacks in Abuja and Kano respectively. Items recovered during the operation include two AK 47 rifles, 458 rounds of 7.62 special and six AK 47 rifle magazines.
"This is due to the cooperation the JTF is receiving from members of the general public. The recent rise in activities of members of the terrorist sect may not be unconnected with the increase in pressure being mounted on them by troops in the North Eastern axis and their desperation to make loud statements of their presence.
"Members of the general public are therefore enjoined to go about their normal businesses without fear as the JTF has increased its patrols to cope with the pressure of the ember periods and fleeing terrorists. However, worrisome is the ease with which terrorists secure accommodation easily in Panshekara, Ja’en, Mariri, Farawa, Hotoro, Sherada, Brigade and other outskirt areas in the state despite appeals by the JTF to property owners to desist from renting their properties to persons with questionable identities.
"The JTF in Kano would not allow the state to be used as haven for terrorists. These appeals having fallen on deaf ears, the JTF would not only continue to destroy any such properties which is found to accommodate terrorists but will also arrest the owners of such properties, treating them as accomplices even if they do not reside in the said property.
"The effort of the JTF would not be successful without the cooperation of the residents of Kano. The JTF therefore calls on all residents of Kano not to relent in the fight against terrorist elements who are seeking refuge in the state by reporting any suspicious persons regardless of gender for immediate action to prevent the loss of lives and properties. Additionally, members of the general public are please enjoined to go about their lawful businesses without any fear and to contact the JTF through its telephone numbers in the event of any distress for rapid response," Iweha stated

WHAT A DISGRACE TO NIGERIA

Despite the triumph of the Golden Eaglets Friday in Abu Dhabi it was a show of shame and national disgrace as NFF General secretary Barrister Musa and the Federations First Vice President Chief Mike Umeh exchanged blows in public, right inside the stadium.
Eye witness account has it that problem started brewing early evening when Chief Umeh wondered why members of the League Management Committee were allocated “ better cars” than NFF chieftains. He then and there told a colleague that Musa was incompetent and not fit to handle NFF matters.
On getting to the stadium, Chief Umeh was given a Category 1 ticket and again he complained insisting that every country was given 20 VIP tickets and wondered why he could not have one as NFF Vice President.
At the stadium Chief Umeh boiled over when he saw members of the LMC in the VIP Box and challenged the GS who said he knew nothing about it “Oga two of us are seating here, I don’t know anything about tickets besides I just arrived yesterday “ the General Secretary replied. He was shocked when Chief Umeh said “you are a useless man .
I have to trek five minutes to ease myself in a competition that belongs to us?” That really got Barrister Ahmadu angry and he told him to withdraw the statement. Instead Chief Umeh repeated it and the General Secretary said he was a “ hopeless man”. As they were sitting together they rose to their feet and went for each other’s jugular saying a lot of unprintable things.
The intervention of some board members including Chief Inyama and some Management staff did little to assuage them. It took some time to get Musa to leave the seat for another one. A board member has called for a probe of the incidence when they get back home. “It was shameful to say the least. Chief Umeh did not behave maturely but there is need to find out where all our VIP tickets went to,” he said.
Meanwhile, it was gathered that the NFF is spoiling for a war with the National Sports Commission, NSC over its penchant for sidelining it whenever football matters get to the presidency. An inside NFF source said the federation members were not happy when the NSC failed to provide seat for them during the reception for the Super Eagles after they won the Africa Nations Cup in South Africa.
“The NFF is not ready to be pushed aside when the President hosts the Eaglets in Abuja. This ceremony is an NFF ceremony, so the NSC should not push the NFF aside. In fact the NFF president, Alhaji Aminu Maigari has done well and should be commended. He even deserves a national honour,” the source stressed.
President Goodluck Jonathan is expected to host the victorious Golden Eaglets today in Aso Rock to show the country’s appreciation for their feat at the U-17 World Cup which has brought honour to the country, his Media aide, Dr. Rueben Abati disclosed shortly after the team won the trophy Friday.

Compensate Boko Haram Victims, APC Tells Jonathan

The All Progressives Congress has disagreed with
President Goodluck Jonathan's position that the
Federal Government will not compensate the
victims of the Boko Haram killings, which started in
2009.
The party said if the decision was upheld, it would
amount to double failure on the part of the Federal
Government and double jeopardy for the victims.
A statement by the Interim National Chairman of the
party, Chief Bisi Akande in Abuja on Wednesday,
contained the party's position.
Akande said in the first instance, the killings and
maiming occurred because the Federal
Government failed in its most important task of
ensuring the security of lives and property.
He added that the same government that failed to
live up to the main reason for its existence, which
he said was the security and welfare of the
citizenry, had now failed to provide succour for the
victims of its own failure.
He said, "This constitutes double irresponsibility on
the part of the government, and double jeopardy for
the thousands of victims, who have been killed and
wounded by the insurgents.
"After the people were victimised by Boko Haram,
they are now being victimised by their government.
This is unacceptable, and President Jonathan must
have a rethink.
"The APC believes that the issue of compensation
for victims of Boko Haram should not be subject to
any debate."
He said all victims of the Boko Haram insurgency
must be compensated without delay, and that they
must be given succour and be made to feel that
their government cares for them.
Akande admitted that compensation would not be
able to bring back the thousands who have been
killed, he said the compensation was capable of
providing succour for the children, parents,
brothers, sisters and other family members left
behind by the victims.

2015: Jonathan Responds to Obasanjo’s Plot to Put Northern President

President Goodluck Jonathan has
allegedly commissioned a group of political experts
to begin to counteract ex-President Olusegun
Obasanjo's possible secret plans to work for the
emergence of a Northerner as the President in
2015.
According to the source of SaharaReporters
Jonathan's team is charged with strategising on the
best manoeuvres to contain Mr. Obasanjo's moves.
President Jonathan has no clear understanding of
where Mr. Obasanjo stands in the crisis tearing
apart the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), but the
President has decided not to take chances by
ignoring Obasanjo.
The Northern members of the team set up by the
President have been mandated to lead the first
stage of Mr. Jonathan's campaigns and
consultations across the entire Northern states.
"Some of the President's pundits have swung into
action in the 'core' Northern states of Sokoto, Kano,
Jigawa, Zamfara, Kebbi, Katsina and northern
Kaduna," the source disclosed.
He added that Jerry Gana, Jonathan Silas Zwingina,
Abdulkadir Kure, and Isaiah Balat were among
those assigned to run the early stages of the
President's campaign in the Middle Belt.
"Another group led by Alhaji Bamanga Tukur and
Barrister Ahmed Gulak is working on the same
mission in the North-East axis," he said.
The source revealed that a key strategy of the
President's group was to seek the support of top
Islamic and Christian clerics in the North. The well-
funded presidential group is offering millions of
naira to selected clerics in return for their political
sympathy for Mr. Jonathan's reelection campaign.
"Mr. President is aware of Chief Obasanjo's
previous antecedents. Look at [Mr. Obasanjo's]
close relationship with the arrowheads of the
rebellion in the PDP. He is the one who made Sule
Lamido, Aliyu Babangida of Niger and Wammako of
Sokoto. It's the same thing with Nyako in Adamawa
State.
"We gathered that Obasanjo is having serious
problems with the IBB [Ibrahim Badamasi
Babangida] and Abdulsalami circle that made it
possible for him to be president in 1999. And we
know that Chief Obasanjo wants to settle the
Umaru Yar'Adua saga that led to the emergence of
Jonathan. He thinks it is best to help install a
Northern President in 2015. And he is also not
happy with Jonathan's style and some power
blocks influencing the president," the source added.

EYE-OPENER: Governor Chime Speaks On Wife's Alleged Imprisonment

photo - EYE-OPENER: Governor Chime Speaks On Wife's Alleged Imprisonment
Yesterday, Governor of Enugu state Sullivan Chime rejected claims of subjecting his spouse, Mrs. Clara Chime, to "house arrest," and declared he is intent to protect her from being ridiculed. His wife, also present at the interview session, denied sending any petition to the National Human Rights Commission accusing Chime of violating her freedom.
Apart from the Governor and his wife, also present were Mrs. Chime's elder brother Mr. Tony Igwe, her neuro-psychiatric doctor, Dr. Aham Agumuo, as well as Governor's siblings, Mrs. May Oji and Dr. Jide Chime.
Mrs. Chime denied applying to the NHRC and hiring services of Mr. Femi Falana (or any other lawyer) to help her seek her freedom from an alleged house arrest at the Governor's lodge, Enugu.
It will be recalled that Falana, in his letter to media houses and the Inspector-General of Police stated that he was hired by the Governor's wife.
Chime said his wife has some health problems, but it would be unkind for him to talk about this issue to the media reprsentatives.
He then said he has done everything to protect his wife's integrity, and was not going to expose her to ridicule because some people try to exploit current situation to involve him in a "war of words".

My Greatest Worry About Holding Political Office – Jonathan

PRESIDENT Goodluck Jonathan has tasked political office holders to be paying greater attention to leading a public service that would earn the people’s support and honour beyond their tenure in office just as Governor Rotimi Amaechi of Rivers state shocked his political opponents as he was at the airport Thursday to receive the President who was in the state for the funeral of his foster mother inlaw, late Madam Charity Oba.
Before the President arrived Port Harcourt that Thursday, speculations were rife in several circles that Governor Amaechi would not be around to receive him. His opponents were apparently shocked when they saw him at the airport among others to welcome President Goodluck Jonathan .
Before the President arrived Port Harcourt that Thursday, speculations were that the governor was not going to be part of the funeral programme and he might not also be at the airport to receive the President.
Their conviction was further strengthened by the fact that the governor was not even in the state that morning. So, the conclusion was that he deliberately travelled out of the state to avoid being part of the funeral program.
Hundreds of supporters of the Supervising Minister for Education, Mr Nyesom Wike were mobilised to the airport as early as 8am to wait for President Jonathan who also did not attend the service of songs. People were in groups discussing the absence of governor Amaechi in the state when suddenly his plane landed at the airport. And he headed straight to the VIP lounge.
What looked like another shocker was when governor Amaechi, his Bayelsa counterpart, Dickson and President Jonathan boarded the same helicopter to Okrika, hometown of the first lady, Dame Patience Jonathan.
While remarking on the life and times of the Late Madam Oba, President Jonathan likened political officeholders exit from office to physical death, adding that the way the people judge a departed soul is the same way they judge a man who has vacated public office in reflection of his deeds while alive or while in office. Jonathan maintained: “We all must die one day.
So, we should do all we can do to contribute to the good and happiness of mankind. We are here to celebrate my mother-in-law today because she stood for my wife and today, my wife is a product of the good deeds of Charity Oba. “And for me, the politics of holding political office is almost like death. What challenges me most is what I will be remembered for when I leave the State House. ”I harbour no ill feelings against criticisms.
I will do what is just, right and necessary because I am more concerned about what posterity will say about me and my efforts in transforming Nigeria.” In-between sobs in her funeral eulogy on her late Stepmother, the nation’s First Lady, Dame Patience said, “You raised me from a tender age, until I was able to stand on the world’s stage.
You taught me the right from wrong, and made me virtuous and strong. You put in my heart God’s own song. But now that you are gone, you are with your creator who loves you more”.
“Although the pain is still deep and raw, I will forever cherish all your memories and celebrate your life, for you were a mother in a million, who laboured in love to make me what I am today. Fare thee well Mama Sisi as the angels watch over you in heaven”.
